Clan MacPhaidein
The Original Owners of the Isle of Mull
All variants of this name derive from the Gaelic Macphaidein, 'little Pat'. In May 563AD Saint Columba, the celebrated founder of the Culdee Church in Scotland, exiled from his native Ireland, traveled to Iona with 12 companions and founded a monastery. From Iona they set about the conversion of pagan Scotland and much of northern England to Christianity. It is believed one of the 12 was Páidín a descendant of Sait Patrick and SheeLa. He was assigned by Saint Oran (also one of the 12) before his death c563AD, to the Isle of Mull to build a chapel and spread the gospel. Páidín will become the progenitor of the Clan MacPhaidein.

Immigration from Broughshane, Ballymena, County Antrim, Ireland from port Larne, Antrim, Ireland on the ship "James and Mary" arriving in Charlestown, South Carolina, United States 18 Oct 1772. Apprenticed under Jeremiah Theus 1772-1774 in Charlestown as a Portrait Painter. Formed Alexander Peden Portrait Painters in 1774 which continues today.

Captain Thomas Alexander Peden was a Portrait Painter/Illustrator/Daguerreian Artist who apprenticed under his father Robert and Grandfather Alexander carrying on the family business Alexander Peden Portraits his grandfather started in 1774. After the war in 1865 he bought out Charles Lanneau's "Gallery of Art" on the second floor of McBee's Hall in Greenville which he had partnered and opened in 1855. He changed the name of the business to Peden Traveling Photographers.
